756 notesThis Is Informative, You Should Watch It of the Day: From the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts comes the whiteboarding of experimental psychologist Steven Pinker’s illuminating talk, “Language as a Window into Human Nature,” which asks and answers the question “why do we feel more comfortable being indirect when there is no uncertainty about what we really mean?”
(Make sure to stick around for the bonus relevancy @ 8:05: “Why are political revolutions triggered when a crowd gathers in a public square?”)

Steven Pinker is a brilliant linguistic psychologist and his theories are really enlightening. I suggest everyone to read his books for they are really easy to understand and approach language in a way thats so obvious and so profound at the same time.
This is why I love studying linguistics!

A ten minute overview of human nature…

I can’t wait for the language part of cognition. It better meet my expectations.

Interesting! Especially the part about political assemblies.
